Why Pelvic Floor Therapy Matters

Most women are told to “just do Kegels.”

But here’s what many don’t know: Your pelvic floor must relax and lengthen during birth — not tighten.

If the muscles are tense, uncoordinated, or unsupported:

  • Pushing can feel harder

  • Tearing risk may increase

  • Pain often worsens

  • Fear increases tension (which affects labor)

And many expecting moms are surprised to learn:

✔ Treatment is gentle and completely safe during pregnancy

✔ Sessions are always tailored to your comfort level

✔ Internal assessment or treatment is never required

✔ You can begin at any stage of pregnancy

Our goal isn’t to add stress or overwhelm — it’s to help you understand what your body needs so you can feel more confident and supported as pregnancy progresses.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Your first prenatal pelvic floor therapy session at Aster & Violet is a 60-minute one-on-one visit focused entirely on you and your pregnancy experience.

We start with a conversation about what you’ve been feeling in your body, things like pelvic pressure, hip or back pain, difficulty turning in bed, or concerns about preparing for birth.

    Your session may include:

    • assessment of posture, breathing, and core coordination

    • gentle hands-on treatment to relieve tension or discomfort

    • exercises to support pelvic floor strength and relaxation

    • guidance on movements that protect your body during pregnancy

You will leave with personalized strategies you can use right away to reduce discomfort and support your body as pregnancy progresses.

  • Not always.

Pelvic floor therapy during pregnancy often focuses on external assessment of posture, core function, breathing, and pelvic alignment. These areas play a major role in pregnancy discomfort and birth preparation.

If an internal pelvic floor assessment would be helpful, it is always optional and only performed with your full consent.

Many women still see significant improvement in pregnancy symptoms and birth preparation without internal examination.

Your comfort and safety are always the priority.

  • Prenatal pelvic floor therapy can begin at any point during pregnancy, but many women start during the second or early third trimester as their body begins to feel the physical effects of pregnancy.

Starting earlier can help prevent common pregnancy symptoms and allow time to learn:

    • effective pushing techniques

    • pelvic floor relaxation for labor

    • core and breathing strategies

    • movement modifications that protect the pelvic floor

Beginning therapy before birth also helps build a foundation that supports smoother labor and faster postpartum recovery.

  • Prenatal pelvic floor therapy is specialized care designed specifically for the unique physical changes of pregnancy and birth preparation.

Instead of only treating pain, sessions focus on:

    • supporting the pelvic floor as the baby grows

    • improving core and breathing coordination

    • reducing strain on the pelvis and lower back

    • preparing the body for labor and pushing

    • reducing the risk of postpartum pelvic floor issues

This approach helps your body function better during pregnancy and recover more easily after birth.

  • Every pregnancy is different, so the number of sessions depends on your symptoms, goals, and stage of pregnancy.

Many women choose to begin care in the second or third trimester and continue periodically as their body changes.

    Common goals include:

    • reducing pregnancy pain

    • improving mobility and comfort

    • learning birth preparation techniques

    • preparing the pelvic floor for labor

During your first visit, we will create a personalized care plan based on your needs so you know exactly what support may be helpful moving forward
